Pacific Rim
Holy fuck this movie is awesome. If you go in expecting awesome fights between giant robots and giant monsters, you will not be disappointed. If you go in expecting deep characterization and powerful themes then what the fuck is wrong with you why can't you just shut up and watch the robots rocket punch the monsters and enjoy it?
The fight choreography was fucking excellent, and the CGI was some of the best i've ever seen. It looked like I would pretty much expect a real fight between giant robots and giant monsters to look.
I wish there'd been more daytime battles, but you can't get everything you want.

you know (some) japanese cartoons have been having both great fights and good-to-excellent characterisation for about 20 years now

Re: Pacific Rim
That's a matter of opinion. Personally I don't find the character work in Pacific Rim to be better or worse than the average anime. Sure there are stand outs like Eva and some of the Gundam stuff, but Pacific Rim still holds up well IMHO against most Japanese stuff.

Re: Pacific Rim
I can get behind some fun giant-robot anime, but Pacific Rim is different. It's live action. For some reason, my brain cares about that difference.
My natural tendency is to compare Pacific Rim to Godzilla movies rather than robot anime, and in those terms Pacific Rim holds its own.

Re: Pacific Rim
If the upcoming Godzilla movie is as well done as Pacific Rim, it might actually make up for the '99 fiasco.

If the upcoming Godzilla film were a giant steaming turd shat out by Nazis and then masturbated upon by serial killers, it would still be better than that Roland Emmerich bullshit.

I'm probably gonna get dogpiled but...
I don't get the hate on the 90's Godzilla movie.
What was so bad about it ?

Re: Pacific Rim
It sucked as a movie in its own right, but nerds hate it because it "desecrated" Godzilla. As if you can desecrate crap.

I can personally boil it down to two or three major things, but for me it's mostly that the cast is just plain generally annoying and bland and forgettable, and the film basically just boils down to a Roland Emmerich special effects fest without any of the thematic or entertainment value of other films in the same franchise. It's not serious enough to be taken in the same vein as the original 1954 Godzilla, but I don't think it's quite silly enough to be as entertaining as Final Wars or Destroy All Monsters; and coupled with the poor quality of its acting, writing, characters, and plotting...
I'm not enough of a fan to feel it desecrated Godzilla, per se, but it was a very, very bad film.

This pretty much. I mean I liked the original alot, but that's almost not even connected to the later movies in any way.

Same here most likely unless I get a bug up my ass about it. I already know how stupid the ending is so that makes me not want to see it.
Re: Pacific Rim
Look,
from my point of view, it's hard for a movie featuring Jean Reno to suck, okay ?
But my memory may be rose-tinted by the fact that this movie gave us the awesome Godzilla : The Animated Series
... Pacific Rim : The Animated Series... Now there's a thought !

I feel a little bad about it though as Del Toro is one of my favorite directors and I'd like to support more projects of his.

Re: Pacific Rim
I wonder what it would actually feature. I mean, in those 12 or so years of war, there was at most half a hundred Kaiju attacks ? A hundred at most ? If the series was only centered directly Kaiju battles, it would need to span more than a decade in-story time, and focus on a shitload of characters / jaegers from all kind of different countries.
Or they could create an alternate continuity and have the Jaegers literally fighting the Monster Of The Week.

Jean Reno is relegated to the position of only entertaining person in that entire film. And is, as with most examples of such, given far too little in the way of screentime.

You know, Roland Emmerich was also oddly enough one of the people behind the Stargate film. Which also spawned a vastly superior televised successor with SG-1.
I wonder if we'll ever see a decent The Day After Tomorrow or 2012 series in the future, as unlikely as it might seem.

Re: Pacific Rim
There was talk of a post 2012 TV series. Like what would the aftermath be. But since it was based on horseshit astrological cuntery by a Stone Age culture and its currently 2013 with no world ending in sight...
